The Cherry Tree

The tree is also called ‘trzereśnia’, or a ‘birdy tree’ in Polish. It is commonly cultivated as a fruit tree. The cherry tree can attain a height up to 25 meters. It is a soaring tree with a conical crown. While growing in solitude attains a lower height and its treetop becomes wider. The cherry leaves are pointed and covered with pubescence from its bottom part. The bark is red-brownish, glossy and peels off characteristically with circular stripes. The cherry tree blooms in April and May. The flowers are white, held in pedicels. The tree is grown for its sweet fruit, which are used for making various kinds of preserves, such as juice, compote, cherry jam, jelly and wine. Cherry has a diuretic and purifying effect. The fruit are beneficial for some internal organs such as kidneys, heart and joints. The wood is esteemed for the manufacture of fine furniture and woodcarving. The tree used to be planted close to farmhouses and in orchards.
