The Apple Tree

Malus domestica

The most popular fruit tree in cultivation in Poland. It is quite a small tree, sometimes occurring in the form of a bush with a wide crown. It can attain a height of 5 up to 10 meters. The leaves are elliptic and corrugated. The apple tree starts blooming in April and May. The flowers are white-pinkish, comprising of 5 petals with visible yellow stamens. The tree begins to bear fruit in July and carries on till October, depending on a variety of a tree. The fruit are a vital source of vitamins. The wood is used as a carpentry material. The varieties that can be found in deserted villages are extremely resistant. Despite the fact that people have not been pruning and taking care of them for nearly 70 years, they still have been bearing fruit in abundance. They used to be planted in the vicinity of households, in orchards, but also in balks where they served as a natural borderline of farmers’ properties. They cast a comforting shade on exhausted farmers during the harvest, and were an enriching source of food.
