The Redcurrant

Ribes rubrum L.

It is a fruit shrub growing from 1 to 2 meters. The palm-shaped leaves are 2 or 5-lobed. The twigs are bare. The blooming period is in May. The flowers are yellow, gathered in clusters. The bush bears fruit in July and August. The fruit are small, red, glazed and juicy, however, sour in taste. They are used for making jams, jellies, juice, producing wine and liqueurs. They have a high pectin content and are rich in vitamin C. The redcurrant was often cultivated in the home gardens, hence the bushes can indicate the farms that ceased to exist.
